Have you ever longed for the benefits of open space yet knew you would never have it, simply due to your own love of city life? I know exactly how you feel. I love the city, the coffee shops, the lights dancing off the lake, I even love the ongoing traffic sounds. In fact I would probably be lost without them. I also love the idea of my own fresh vegies and my own hands digging in fresh soil and now I can have both and so can you.
I grow everything on my balcony every year, literally everything. I have different peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, an assortment of green and wax beans I even have a few trees. I know you’re asking yourself right now how I have trees on my balcony. I only have two trees a banana and an avocado, they’re dwarf trees that I keep in pot so that I can bring them indoors for the winter.
For all of my climbing vegies, I have made a climbing station for them out of simple garden string and 3 1X1’s that the string attaches to on the two sides and top. This allows my plants to climb up my climbing station and enjoy full sunlight all day long.
My peppers and tomatoes are grown in basic tall pots. I have attached a board that acts like a shelf to the top edge of my balcony that each pot sits on. This ensures that they each have plenty of sunlight.
This next season I’m planning on making a second climbing station for the other side of my balcony. I will be trying my hand with some berries, I’m not sure how well they’ll do or how difficult it’ll be to train them to climb. I am looking forward to growing lots of berries even if it’s through trial and error.
If you have adequate sunlight, you can have several plants indoors when outdoor gardening becomes to difficult.
