Today I have to admit I was genuinely surprised. Things like this don’t usually happen. To be honest, I would even say I was a little amazed, simply because even if it does happen, it certainly doesn’t happen every day.
So what happen? An elderly man walked into sears and returned not only the money he had stolen, also a nice chunk to go with it. If that didn’t surprise me enough, the manager at Sears, Gary Lorentson is not just depositing it as we would expect, he’s placing it into a fund to help families in need. This lead me to even another surprise, Sears adopts families in need each year and helps them out with holiday expenses. This year, they are helping military families that have recent family members who have returned from combat.
Apparently, the man who returned stolen money had originally stolen $20 or $30 dollars from one of the cash registers at Sears back in the 1940’s. This information was in a note that he had placed in an envelope along with a one hundred dollar bill. I can only assume since he finally brought it back and then some that times were hard and he was simply struggling at the time and desperate. Unfortunately, I’ll never know for certain since the unnamed man didn’t sign his note, he simply walked in and handed Gary his envelop and then walked back out.
As for my other two surprises, I am thrilled that Sears is using their returned money to help other families that are currently struggling. It’s too bad that this unnamed man didn’t have some extra help, maybe he would’ve never stolen to begin with and would have lived out his life without the memory of what he had done. Honestly, all three of my surprises have restored my faith in humanity.
